Competing for a Cause to Support the YMCA of Southern BC
Through the innovative Compete for a Cause initiative, the Urban Systems Foundation and Stober Foundation have come together to collectively donate a total of $15,000 to the YMCA of Southern Interior BC.
The Compete for a Cause initiative was created by the Stober Foundation’s CEO, Keith Brewster, to give members of our community the chance to make a significant charitable impact in Kelowna – and have some fun along the way. Alongside his best friend, Cam, these self-described "freak athletes" take on all challengers and donate $5,000 to a charity of your choice should you beat them at a sport or activity of your choosing.
The Urban Systems Foundation was the first organization to participate and match the Stober Foundation’s gift. The challenge was to design and build a popsicle stick catapult that could launch Play-Doh. Whoever launched the furthest won. With a team of engineers and planners, the Urban Systems Foundation team easily defeated Keith and Cam, resulting in a total collective donation of $15,000 to the YMCA.
This collaboration between the Urban Foundation and the Stober Foundation will help fund the YMCA's Financial Assistance funding for youth development programs, which include after-school activities, sports leagues, and summer camps. These programs are critical to the well-being of young people in the community, as they provide opportunities for socialization, physical activity, and personal growth. These programs are accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstances, and are available at various YMCA locations in the Southern Interior.
The Urban Systems Foundation and the Stober Foundation have a shared commitment to making a positive impact in the community. The YMCA is an organization that aligns with both foundations' values, as it provides resources and programs that serve people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, with a focus on building strong communities through positive relationships and shared values. By working together, the two organizations amplified their impact to help ensure that young people have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Any community member or organization is encouraged to challenge Keith and Cam to their favorite activity or sport. Visit the Compete for a Cause web page to learn more about the initiative and submit your challenge.
